As George Orwell wrote in his essay “Politics and the English Language”,

"The English language becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts."

Editing the classics can be a way of improving the language and the thoughts that we inherit from the past, and of making them more suitable for the present and the future.
